Driver Services

Logo for Motor Vehicle DivisionThe mission of the Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) is to identify and promote efficient, cost-effective programs that benefit the interests, safety and well-being of Montana citizens through licensing, registering and regulating the motoring activities of the public.

The Division continuously strives for excellence in customer service. In recent years, streamlining the way we do business has allowed us to improve our efficiency and make our services more convenient for our customers. A major part of that process is a new computer system – the Montana Enhanced Registration & Licensing Information Network (MERLIN).

MERLIN is being implemented in stages, with the most recent involving the April 2009 rollout of the new title and registration system throughout the state.

With these changes, many MVD services are now available on the Internet. Our customers can request their driving records, research a vehicle's history, schedule an appointment for certain driver license services, perfect a security interest in a vehicle at the time of sale, or renew their vehicle registration online. In the future, watch for online perfection and release of security interests in vehicles, calculators to compute anticipated vehicle registration fees, and more.

As we move forward with a commitment to increased customer service, MVD looks forward to serving you.
