Public Safety Officer Standards and Training (POST)

On July 1, 2007, the Montana Peace Officers Standards and Training Advisory Council became the Montana Public Safety Officer Standards and Training Council. The Council is now administratively attached to the Department of Justice.

The 2007 legislative changes also expanded the Council's duties and changed the definition of "public safety officer." One of the most notable changes is that Reserve Officers are now under the direction of POST.

Another important change is that we are updating the online Training and Certification Transcript database. As part of the effort to enhance that system's security, we have discontinued the use of Social Security numbers as identifiers. Instead, we are issuing new POST ID numbers to every public safety officer in the system. This ID number will stay with officers throughout their careers in Montana.

We are also writing new Administrative Rules, which will take several months and will include public hearings so agencies can comment on changes that affect them.

We appreciate the patience of those we serve as we put all of these changes into place. To get in touch with me, please use the Contact information below. I look forward to fulfilling the duties of the executive director's position.

Revocations and Suspensions

Under Administrative Rule 23.14.802, the POST Council reviews complaints against public safety officers and, if appropriate, may revoke or suspend an officer's certification. The Montana POST Integrity Report provides a summary of revocation and suspension cases on which the POST Council has ruled since 2004. The report is updated quarterly following POST Council meetings.
