Montana Lands and Natural Resources
"We the people of Montana grateful to God for the quiet beauty of our state, the grandeur of our mountains, the vastness of our rolling plains, and desiring to improve the quality of life, equality of opportunity and to secure the blessings of liberty for this and future generations do ordain and establish this constitution."
Preamble, Montana Constitution
The Constitution and laws give the Department of Justice and the Attorney General a broad range of responsibilities related to protecting Montana's environment. We are involved in the management, protection and restoration of Montana lands through participation in the Land Board, water rights negotiations and the Natural Resource Damage Program.
Montana has an environment worth protecting. I am proud of the department's ongoing efforts to defend public access to state lands and protect our natural resources:
- In February 2007, we took Wyoming to court to protect the water in the Tongue and Powder River Basins.
- Through the Natural Resource Damage Program, we oversee the impressive work being done to restore the Upper Clark Fork River Basin, damaged by a century of mining in the Butte and Anaconda areas.
- Through the Land Banking Program, the Land Board has acquired and protected productive lands with full public access. For example, we have acquired the Tongue River Ranch in Custer County providing extensive upland game bird habitat and miles of river access. And a series of land exchanges in the Alberton Gorge has opened one of the most stunning stretches of the Clark Fork River to Montana citizens.
