Active Recruitment for Montana Highway Patrol Open Until Dec. 4

HELENA – The Montana Highway Patrol is recruiting for officers for training to begin in April 2007.

"As always, we encourage interested women and minority candidates to apply to join the Patrol," MHP Col. Paul Grimstad said. "A career in the Patrol is a great way to serve Montana citizens."

The Patrol accepts applications only during active recruitment. The law enforcement basic training course begins April 8, 2007, and the deadline for applications is December 4.

Grimstad noted that the Patrol is continuing to implement changes made during the 2005 Legislature. "We are moving toward increased numbers of troops and pay that is competitive with local law enforcement agencies," he said.

For details about testing and other requirements, Grimstad said interested candidates can contact the Patrol's recruitment office toll-free at 1-877-8-PATROL (872-8765) or visit the Department of Justice website at www.doj.mt.gov and click on the bright yellow "Highway Patrol Now Testing" button. Information is also available at Montana Job Service offices.

Grimstad said that in addition to basic traffic safety and enforcement, the MHP offers specialized training and opportunities in crash investigation and reconstruction, firearms training, police vehicle operations, special events support, executive protection, hazardous materials training, safety education and other training.

Applicants must be at least 18 years old and have either a high school diploma or a GED. They must be U.S. citizens and must be Montana residents at the time they are sworn in as officers. Other requirements include a valid driver's license and three years driving experience.
