Lightning Fries Phones at Title & Registration Bureau

HELENA – A lightning strike is the likely culprit that fried phone lines at the Title and Registration bureau in Deer Lodge this weekend, Motor Vehicle Division administrator Dean Roberts said Tuesday morning.

The computer system that services the bureau’s telephone lines was severely damaged and can’t be repaired until parts are flown in from Los Angeles, Roberts explained.

“The Department of Administration is doing everything it can to get our phones back up,” Roberts said, “but it looks like it will be a week before the bureau will be able to take calls again.”

Roberts asked that, until the problem is resolved, people who have an emergency and need to contact the Title and Registration Bureau call the Motor Vehicle Division office in Helena at (406) 444-3933 [phone number updated 2/6/09]. Helena staff will take their name, telephone number and the details of their problem, relay the information to the Title and Registration bureau via e-mail, and bureau staff will respond using cell phones.

“We appreciate the public’s patience while we try to work around this unexpected problem,” Roberts noted.
