Highway Patrol Announces Career Fair, POST Test Dates

HELENA – Representatives of the Montana Highway Patrol will take part in a number of career fairs this spring.

“A career in the Patrol is a rewarding way to serve Montanans,” said Colonel Paul Grimstad, “and we encourage women and minorities to find out more about a career with the Patrol. Our goal is to have a Montana Highway Patrol force that reflects the diversity of the state.”

Grimstad noted that the Patrol is preparing for changes made during the 2005 Legislature.

“We are moving toward increased numbers of troops and improved pay that is competitive with local law enforcement agencies,” he said.

The Highway Patrol offers advanced training, with opportunities to specialize in a variety of areas including aviation, accident reconstruction, field training, hazardous materials, defensive tactics, firearms, police vehicle operations, executive protection, personal security and others.

This year, the appearances at the career fairs are coordinated with the Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) test. The POST test is the first step in the MHP recruiting process, and this year it will be administered one day after each career fair. Interested men and women can take the POST test on those days, or on any date the test is administered. They may register for the test on the day of the career fair, or in advance.

For details about the test and other requirements, Grimstad said interested candidates can contact the Patrol’s recruitment office toll-free at 1-877-8PATROL (872-8765), e-mail the MHP at MHP@mt.gov, or visit the MHP website.

Applicants must be at least 18 years old and have either a high school diploma or a GED. They must be U.S. citizens and must be Montana residents at the time they are sworn in as officers. Other requirements include a valid driver’s license and three years’ driving experience.
