DOJ: News Release

Online Appointment Scheduling Available April 13 for Several Driver Exam Stations

HELENA – Motor Vehicle Division acting administrator Brenda Nordlund announced today that, beginning April 13, Montana citizens in some areas will be able to schedule their driver licensing appointments online.

Online appointment scheduling will be available April 13 to customers who plan to visit the driver exam stations in Billings, Bozeman, Columbus, Hardin, Helena, Red Lodge and Townsend. Beginning next week, customers can go to the DOJ website and click on the Appointment Scheduling link to schedule an appointment for written testing, out-of-state license transfers or completing some driver education programs. Other driver exam stations around the state will continue to provide walk-in services.

“Online scheduling will give people the flexibility to plan their driver licensing appointments whenever it fits into their daily lives,” Nordlund said. “Scheduling an appointment will save Montanans time and fuel costs by reducing the number of times they would travel to a driver licensing station only to find out they cannot be served that day.”

In addition to the online scheduling service, the website lists the required documents for each appointment, fees and other useful information.

“We receive numerous questions about what types of identification, proof-of-residence or other types of documents people need to bring to appointments,” Field Operations Bureau Chief Kristine Thatcher said. “The information on the website helps ensure that each customer is prepared prior to the appointment so, when they arrive, we can complete their transaction. Out of consideration for all of our customers, those who are late for their appointment may need to reschedule.”

Even at the stations listed above, some services cannot be scheduled online.

  • Driving tests for anything other than motorcycles, ATVs and three-wheelers cannot be scheduled online. All other driving tests must be scheduled by calling the Motor Vehicle Division Customer Service Center at 1-866-450-8034.
