Amber Alert Scam Surfaces

A new scam preying on people’s compassion for missing children is ringing telephones across the nation, the Montana Department of Justice warned on Thursday.

In the scam, the phone rings and the caller ID reads “Amber Alert.” When the call is answered, a voice on the other end begins soliciting funds in the name of Amber Alert, the nationwide program that immediately notifies people of a missing child.

“Scammers will try anything to rip you off. They prey upon our vulnerabilities,” said Montana Attorney General Steve Bullock. “Amber Alert is a worthwhile system that really works, but this scam is just an attempt to steal your money. Don’t fall for it.”

The scam has been reported in several states. Montanans who receive the call are encouraged to report it the Attorney General’s Office of Consumer Protection at (406) 444-4500 or toll free at (800) 481-6896.
