Bureau of Indian Affairs Ordered to Reconsider its Decision Denying Little Shell Band’s Petition for Recognition

This afternoon, Attorney General Tim Fox issued the following statement regarding Interior Secretary Sally Jewell’s order that the Bureau of Indian Affairs reconsider its decision denying the Little Shell band of the Chippewa Tribe federal recognition:

“This is great news for the Little Shell band,” said Montana Attorney General Tim Fox, who earlier this year urged the Department of the Interior to reconsider the initial decision denying federal recognition. “The state of Montana has recognized the Little Shell band of the Chippewa Tribe since 2003, and federal recognition is long overdue. I want to thank Interior Secretary Jewell for her decision to order reconsideration of their petition. My office will continue to work with the Little Shell band to do all we can to secure federal recognition.”
