Investigations Bureau

The Investigations Bureau is comprised of the Fire Prevention and Investigation Section, the Major Case Section, the Medicaid Fraud Control Section and the Special Investigations Section, which includes the Computer Crimes Unit,the Sexual or Violent Offender Registry, the Sex Offender Compliance Unit, the Internet Crimes Against Children Unit, and the Financial Crimes Unit.

DCI agents in the Investigations Bureau specialize in a number of fields. At the request of city, county, state and federal law enforcement agencies, the division’s investigators provide direct assistance in a broad range of criminal investigations.

DCI assists in cases including, but not limited to:

  • homicide and other violent crimes
  • arson and other fire investigations
  • Medicaid fraud
  • elder abuse and exploitation within health care facilities
  • computer crime
  • sex crimes
  • corruption and official misconduct
  • complex financial crimes

Fire Prevention and Investigation Section
This section includes the Montana State Fire Marshal’s Office. More information about this office, including contact information for the Montana Fire Marshal, can be found on the State Fire Marshal’s Office page.

Major Case Section
The Major Case Section provides criminal investigative assistance to city, county, state and federal law enforcement agencies at their request. The section also conducts criminal investigations of allegations referred by the Montana State Fund and the Department of Justice, Motor Vehicle Division.

Medicaid Fraud Control Section

The Medicaid Fraud Control Section is responsible for investigating any crime that occurs in a health care facility, including theft, drug diversion, sexual assault and homicide. The section also investigates elder exploitation, elder abuse and fraud by providers within the Medicaid system. This may include investigations into doctors, dentists, durable medical equipment companies, mental health providers and other Medicaid providers.

Special Investigations Section
This section has five units that provides criminal investigative assistance to city, county, state, and federal law enforcement agencies in areas of Computer Crime, Sex Offender Compliance, Internet Crimes against Children, Financial Crimes and the Sexual and Violent Offender Registry.  Agents and staff within these units specialize in their area of investigative expertise.

Child Sexual Predator Unit
Begun in 2010, this specialized unit includes criminal investigators, analysts, a prosecutor and a forensic computer analysis team. This expert group supports local law enforcement across the state in the investigation and prosecution of criminals who victimize children.

Montana Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC):
We have partnered with the Montana ICAC Task Force to assist in educating, investigating, and prosecuting computer-facilitated child exploitation cases.
